The Must-See Nashville Races of 2024 - 2025

All races are thrilling, but not all races are equally thrilling. Here is our list of the must-see races this season.

The Top Race of the Year - Big Machine Music City Grand Prix

The number one Nashville race of the year is the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix, which is back at the Nashville Superspeedway in 2025. This race marks the end of the season in INDYCAR, with drivers fighting for those last-minute points to determine the INDYCAR champion. This year, fans watched as Alex Palou took the INDYCAR championship for the third time. Colton Herta won the race, taking home his first victory on his home racetrack.

Off the track, the weekend was packed full with performances by Riley Green, Gary LeVox, Brantley Gilbert, Chris Daughtry, and more of the biggest artists in the Music City. Over 40,000 people descended on the superspeedway over the weekend for a time of great racing, family fun, and local food trucks.

Next year, the race will be back at the Superspeedway, and bigger than ever. The dates have been moved to Labor Day weekend, and concert performances by your favorite artists are being planned.

Date: August 31, 2025

NASCAR Comes to Nashville for the Ally 400

The Ally 400 takes place on NASCAR’s largest concrete-only track, the Nashville Superspeedway. The race is a 399-mile race consisting of 200 laps. The race has camping available and is a great way to start off the summer. On the same weekend, the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Campaign World Truck Series also race in the Tenessee Lottery 250 and Rackley Roofing 200, respectively.

For those who love the traditional stock car racing of NASCAR, this is a great race to attend at a time of year with great weather in Nashville. Camping is available right at the track, making it the perfect event for a weekend of racing, tailgating, and summer fun.

The Nashville Superspeedway’s origins date back to the late 1990s when a surge in NASCAR's popularity led to plans for a new facility in the Nashville area. Despite numerous setbacks, the track officially began construction in August of 1999, and the track was completed in early 2001. The track’s opening was a major event, hosting its first races in April of 2001, with Ken Schrader and Greg Biffle winning the ARCA Re/Max Series and Busch Series events, respectively.

The track gained prominence throughout the 2000s as both NASCAR and INDYCAR held races in the speedway, with the superspeedway’s fastest lap being set in the 2003 Firestone Indy 200 by Sam Hornish Jr. His time around the 1.33-mile track was just 22.9685 seconds. Even with all that excitement, the track ceased operations for the 2012 season.

In 2020, Dover Motorsports announced plans to renovate the track, spending an estimated $8 - $10 million. By early 2024, the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix moved its race from the streets of downtown Nashville to the superspeedway, cementing its place in the future of racing.

The Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway has a long and rich history, opening in the summer of 1904 with a 1.125-mile oval dirt track where “horseless carriages” and motorcycles were raced. Horse racing also occurred at the track. Racing pioneer Barney Oldfield participated in races organized after the 1904 World’s Fair, showcasing cars reaching over 60 mph for the first time, incredible speeds for the era.

In 1915, the track began hosting annual events in conjunction with the state fair. There were even drivers attracted from the Indianapolis 500, which helped the track solidify its place in the American racing scene. The dirt track was used until 1958, when the speedway built a paved half-mile track, moving the track into the modern era of racing. This led the way for the 1959 NASCAR Grand National race at the speedway, one of only four times where all 12 cars finished the race.

Through the 60s and 70s, racing legends such as Bobby Allison, Donnie Allison, Red Farmer, and Darrel Waltrip were regulars on the track. Additionally, when the country music legend was not singing Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs, Marty Robbins was often seen racing at the track in his signature purple and yellow cars.

The NASCAR Cup Series left the track in 1984, but the track adapted by introducing a new division featuring smaller “Late Model Stock Cars”, which attracted future NASCAR stars such as Dale Earnhardt and Bill Elliott. The ARCA Racing Series returned to the track in 1992, with the Busch Series and Craftsmen Truck Series following in 1995.

In 2012, the All-American 400 was revived, remaining one of the most prestigious late-model races in the country to this day. A major revitalization agreement was reached in 2021 with the intention of bringing NASCAR’s Cup Series back to the track, cementing its place as a cornerstone of American racing history.

Directions from Downtown Nashville:

  1. Head south on I-65.
  2. Take the Wedgewood Avenue exit.
  3. Turn left onto Wedgewood Avenue.
  4. Follow the signs to the Fairgrounds Speedway.
